Total length 53cm - weight about 1 -6kg. Usually rufuos-brown grizzled with black - rump and back legs bright rufous and sides of the face are greyish. The underparts are pinkish-buff and the busky tail is deep red. They live in rocky terrain, are nocturnal and normally solitary, though several may shelter together during the day in deep rock crevices. They are grazers. The young are born naked and remain in the fur-lined nest till well grown.
