Description

Males overall length 1 -5m and up to 43kg. Females smaller - 1 -2m and 17kg. Colour varies from greyish-brown to dark brown. Males can appear almost black with a dark mane on neck and shoulders. Long forelegs and long - dextrous hands and feet. Males' long muzzles and canine teeth give them a formidable appearance. Adaptable to any habitat where food - water and resting places are available. Staple diet is grass - bulbs - fruit - insects and scorpions - but they are completely omnivorous and opportunistic - raiding crops and houses in built areas. Social - living in troops which vary in size due to changes in male dominance and human interference. Extremely vocal and boisterous.
