Stout, tufted, rhizomatous perennial up to 1m. Many leaves, fleshy, quill-like, hairless, bright-green, each leaf wrapped with brown, papery sheaths at the base; bears many nodding, small white flowers in widely branching panicle; fruits hairless, about 10mm long.
