Stemless geophyte, bulbs are large and gummy. Leaves trifoliate, leaflets broadly wedge-shaped sometimes notched, glabrous or hairy, conspicuously veined and often purplish beneath. Flowers are bright yellow and borne singly; after flowering the flower stem arches over to bring the developing seeds near to the ground.
Latin: luteus = deep yellow, buttercup yellow.
