This widespread Mimetes is the best known member of the genus. The numerous erect branches are covered with overlapping leaves which change from green on the lower parts to bright red at the top where the leaves embrace the capitula to form a bright and colourful inflorescence. The red and white tipped 'stump' gives the name rooistompie. The name also alludes to the persistent rootstock which resprouts after fire. The flowers are shorter than the minutely toothed leaves.
