Robust and variable perennial forming dense tufts. Leaves long and drooping, hence the common name, up to 40cm x 3-4mm. Inflorescence is an open or contracted panicle 10-30cm long; branches solitary, sub-opposite or in a pseudo-whorl; spikelets dark grey to dark olive green and 4-10mm long.

Often found in disturbed soil, mainly well drained fertile soil
