A variable species. Erect or floating annual, sometimes rhizomatous perennial. Leaves opposite, fleshy, linear to paddle-shaped; upper floating leaves sometimes broader and forming little rafts; flowers one to three in upper axils, star-shaped, white to pinkish, petals 1.5-2mm long.
