Dioecious rhizomatous perennial up to 40cm. Slender reddish upright stem, branched in the top half. Arrow-shaped leaves with pointed lobes at the base; stipules conspicuous, papery. Flowers yellowish-green - male, or reddish - female. Fruits red.
