Strongly foetid smelling, lax straggling perennial up to 90cm. Leaves opposite, lanceolate, soft; stipular sheath has several bristles. Flowers few, mostly on lateral branchlets, greenish.
The putrid odour from the partly dried plant is suggestive of an anal emission of gas (Afrik: poep) hence the common name!
