Untidy, spreading shrublet up to 40cm with hairy stems. Leaves are 4-nate, hairy and honey-scented; flowers are off-white or rose coloured, bell-shaped; corolla has open mouth which exposes ring of light brown stamens and anthers.

Latin: sub = under, varicus = straddling; referring to straggling habit of the plants of this species
