Rhizomatous geophyte up to 40cm. Stems rounded and usually unbranched. Leaves longer than flower stem, cylindrical, rush-like and fibrotic. Flowers blue, style minutely notched; bracts dry, rusty and translucent on the edges.

21 species of Aristea occur in the SW Cape, 10 species occur in Fernkloof.
