Cormous geophyte up to 30cm. Hairy stem of this species is a distinguishing feature. Leaves sword-shaped to linear, 2-5mm wide, margins and midrib slightly thickened. Flowers in a 2-7 flowered spike, blue to violet; tepals spreading and 10-15mm long; bracts green, often reddish and becoming dry above.

Common name Sysie refers to the silky texture of the flowers and was first recorded by Thunberg c. 1772.

Can form carpets of blue in spring.
