Description

Erect green or red perennial. Leaves variable, the lower stalked with heart-shaped bases, the upper stalkless, smaller with heart- to arrow-shaped bases. Flowers: outer petals reddish, the inner green, clustered along a branched spike.

Rumex is the Latin name for sorrel, used by Pliny.

Habitat

Common on sandy flats and slopes, especially after fire.
