Perennial up to 90cm, sometimes hairy below. Leaves do not have stipules (stipule = outer leaflike appendage at base of leaf or leafstalk), filiform to egg-shaped, sometimes toothed, fleshy; flowers are white, mauve or purple; petals have basal appendages; ovules 20-50; seedpods long and narrow.
